bookish.world has no photographs, no links and no upvotes. None of that is minimalism for its own sake — each one removes a specific failure mode.
Images win attention that sentences deserve
In any mixed feed, the picture wins. That is not a claim about taste, it is about how fast an image is parsed compared to a paragraph. In a community about writing, that ordering is backwards.
No links means no drive-by marketing
The overwhelming majority of link posts in a hobby community are somebody promoting something. Removing the affordance removes the incentive, and the moderation load with it.
No scores means no scoreboard
A visible score turns a conversation into a competition and buries anything unpopular. Reactions say how something landed without ranking anyone.
What this costs
Book covers are genuinely useful for recognition, and we lose that. Some conversations want a diagram. We have decided those are acceptable losses for a feed that stays readable.
What it buys
Pages that load on any connection, a feed you cannot lose an hour in by accident, and a place where the person who wrote the better paragraph gets the attention.
